Atlanta Becomes HBCU Football Hub in 2026

By Pretty Girls Media Sports Staff

ATLANTA — Atlanta is preparing to become the center of the HBCU football and marching band world in 2026, with a schedule that will bring major games, rivalries, homecomings and championship events to the city throughout the fall.

Following a summer in which Atlanta hosted major matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including a semifinal, the city will transition from international soccer to a full slate of Atlanta HBCU football in 2026.

From the Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kickoff Presented by Toyota in August to the Cricket Celebration Bowl Presented by Toyota in December, Atlanta's HBCU football calendar will span the opening weeks of the season and culminate with the HBCU national championship.

MEAC/SWAC Challenge Opens HBCU Season

The HBCU football season officially begins in Atlanta on Saturday, Aug. 29, when Alabama A&M faces Howard in the Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kickoff Presented by Toyota at Center Parc Stadium.

The Week 0 matchup will be nationally televised and will feature more than football.

Howard's Showtime Marching Band and Alabama A&M's Marching Maroon & White will bring the pageantry and musical traditions associated with HBCU football to the national stage.

The game represents the opening chapter of a season that will repeatedly bring HBCU football fans back to Atlanta.

Big Cat Classic Brings Rivalry to the AUC

One week later, the action moves to the Atlanta University Center.

Morehouse will host Clark Atlanta in the Big Cat Classic at B.T. Harvey Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 5, renewing one of Atlanta's most recognizable HBCU football rivalries.

Both programs enter the matchup with new head coaches and an opportunity to establish themselves early in the SIAC season.

The game will also feature a battle between two prominent marching bands, with Morehouse's House of Funk facing Clark Atlanta's Mighty Marching Panthers.

The matchup adds another layer to Atlanta's HBCU football calendar, where the competition extends from the field to the stands.

Atlanta's HBCU Football Schedule Keeps Growing

The Big Cat Classic will be followed by an extended run of HBCU football throughout the city.

According to the schedule, Atlanta is set to host HBCU football games during each of the first five weeks of the season and eight of the first 10 weeks.

Upcoming matchups include:

  • Sept. 12: Morehouse vs. Central State

  • Sept. 12: Clark Atlanta vs. Kentucky State

  • Sept. 19: Clark Atlanta vs. Miles College

  • Sept. 26: Morehouse vs. Edward Waters

  • Sept. 26: Clark Atlanta vs. Warner University

The schedule gives fans multiple opportunities to experience HBCU football in Atlanta while bringing alumni, students and supporters back to the city throughout the fall.

Homecoming Season Adds to Atlanta's HBCU Calendar

Atlanta's football schedule will continue into October with two major homecoming celebrations.

Morehouse will host Savannah State on Oct. 10 for its homecoming game at B.T. Harvey Stadium.

The following weekend, Clark Atlanta will host Allen University on Oct. 17 for its homecoming matchup at CAU Panther Stadium.

Clark Atlanta will close its home schedule on Oct. 31 against Albany State.

The combination of football, marching bands, alumni events and campus traditions makes Atlanta's HBCU calendar about more than game day.

It creates recurring opportunities for alumni, students, fans, sponsors, businesses and media to gather throughout the season.

HBCU Football Creates Economic and Cultural Impact

The concentration of HBCU football events could also provide an economic boost for Atlanta.

Football weekends bring visitors into the city and create activity for hotels, restaurants, transportation services, retailers and local businesses.

The impact extends beyond the economic side.

HBCU football provides Atlanta with an opportunity to showcase Black college culture, marching-band traditions, alumni pride and the unique atmosphere surrounding historically Black colleges and universities.

That cultural component makes Atlanta's 2026 football calendar distinct from a traditional sports schedule.

Celebration Bowl Brings the Season Home

After months of regular-season competition, Atlanta will once again become the destination for the conclusion of the HBCU football season.

In December, Mercedes-Benz Stadium will host the Cricket Celebration Bowl Presented by Toyota, where the champions of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) will meet for the HBCU national championship.

Before the championship game, the Red Lobster Band of the Year competition will showcase some of the nation's top HBCU marching bands.

The combination of championship football and marching-band competition makes Celebration Bowl weekend one of the biggest celebrations of HBCU culture on the annual sports calendar.

Atlanta's HBCU Football Moment

Atlanta's 2026 sports calendar will already have a significant place in the national spotlight after hosting the FIFA World Cup.

The city's HBCU football schedule provides another opportunity to maintain that momentum.

The MEAC/SWAC Challenge will open the season. The Big Cat Classic will bring rivalry football to the AUC. Morehouse and Clark Atlanta will keep the action moving through the fall. Homecoming weekends will bring alumni and fans back to campus.

Then, in December, the Celebration Bowl will crown an HBCU national champion at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

For Atlanta, that creates something bigger than a collection of individual football games.

It creates a season-long HBCU sports destination.

For years, Atlanta has been known as a city where the HBCU football season starts and ends.

In 2026, it has an opportunity to make an even bigger statement:

The season starts here.

The season stays here.

And the season ends here.
