SWAC MEDIA DAY 2023
Did somebody say college football is back?! Yes! College football is only a matter of days away and before even season there is a conference Media Day which allows the media to engage with the Head Coaches and the top players from each team in the conference. This is the time to get those grilling questions in and see who has been putting in that offseason work. Many do not know but the SWAC Conference stands for the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Thus, it means that the 12 teams are all within the southwestern region- Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Texas, and Georgia.
The SWAC Conference was also known for where Head Coach Deion Sanders made his impact at The Jackson State State University. As you know he has now moved on to coach at Colorado University. However, there did not seem to be a beat missed as the Tigers took media day by storm. They walked in with a confidence that was unmatched. They were ready for whatever was thrown at them in the heat of the day. Defensive back Devonta Davis stated that he has “something to prove” and that he took “the disrespect from last season as motivation”. He is determined to not only show the nonbelievers and doubters of his talent, but to show that he has the ability to lead the team back to the Championship.
On another note, the Delta Devils came with a fresh yet determined attitude as they not only made a fashion statement rocking these electric blue suits. They made a season statement with their phrase “The Time is Now”. This phrase is coined by their new Head Coach Kendrick Wade. He is more than ready to hit the field running as he has something to prove and show not only to his staff, athletes, and school but to the entire Mississippi Valley community! Coach Wade stated he is excited and ready to show just why he was the right man for the job. The team will make their debut at the annual Chicago Classic against Central State University.
Another notable team was Alabama State University. Their head coach and team have a certain swag to them that brings all eyes to them. Their head coach is also going into his second year and he has made it known that he believes wholeheartedly in his routine and his plan for the team. He stated during an interview that he brings his 11 years as a NFL Veteran into his approach for his team, and it is very important to continue to improve on the routine the team has rather than change it. It will be great to see how explosive the team is this season under his direction.
Overall, the media day set the tone for the season. Every team has a certain confidence that they bring to the conference which was firing through the entire day. The one thing that I can say is that each team is unique, passionate, and full of excitement. I am excited to see how the conference levels out this season. The start of the season kicks off with the SWAC/ MEAC Challenge on August 26, 2023 at 7:30PM EST in Atlanta, GA.
