Tigers Grind Out 22-7 Win Over Georgia Southern in Rain-Delayed Home Opener
CLEMSON, S.C. — Clemson survived a sloppy, storm-delayed home opener Saturday night, holding off Georgia Southern 22-7 in a game that tested patience as much as talent.
The matchup, played under Striped Day, Football Reunion Day and Hall of Fame Day festivities, was pushed back to a 9:30 p.m. kickoff because of weather. Fans stuck around anyway, packing the stadium despite the late start and the rain that lingered into the night.
Clemson (1-1) entered looking to bounce back from a loss to LSU, while Georgia Southern (1-1) came in off a 31-0 shutout of Charleston Southern.

A Slow, Wet Start
Georgia Southern won the coin toss and deferred, giving Clemson the ball to start. Quarterback Christopher Vizzina opened the game with three straight incomplete passes, and the Tigers were forced to punt. Georgia Southern fumbled the ensuing possession, and Clemson recovered.
Clemson's run game found its footing on the drive, though wet conditions made securing passes difficult; wideout Wesco Jr. was among those who struggled to hang on to early targets. The Tigers pushed through minor mistakes and slips on the rain-slicked grass to reach the end zone first, with T.J. Moore hauling in the touchdown and the extra point making it 7-0.
Reynolds Takes Over Under Center
Georgia Southern couldn't answer. Clemson got the ball back, but Vizzina was intercepted, and the Eagles again failed to move the chains before punting it away. Clemson took over at its own 31, and backup quarterback Tait Reynolds entered the game in relief of Vizzina.
Reynolds nearly extended the drive, but on third-and-2 he was stripped on a keeper, and Georgia Southern recovered at the 7-yard line. Clemson's defense held, forcing a punt that Wesco Jr. returned well — aided further by a Georgia Southern face-mask penalty. The Tigers' defense continued to control the line of scrimmage, giving the Eagles little room to operate.
Field Goals Fill the Gaps
Back on offense with Reynolds still at the helm, Clemson drove into scoring range again but stalled in the red zone, settling for a field goal to push the lead to 10-0 with 14:57 left in the second quarter.
The next several possessions were a stalemate, with both offenses bogging down and defenses carrying the game — a formula neither side could rely on for long. Clemson eventually got the ball back and drove into position for a 34-yard field goal, extending the lead to 13-0 with 4:54 left in the half.
Georgia Southern capitalized on a late defensive lapse to score a touchdown before halftime, but Clemson answered right back with another field goal. The Tigers took a 16-7 lead into the break.
Halftime Honors
At halftime, Clemson honored its Hall of Fame class, and the Tiger Band paid tribute to the 1980s with a run of hits that drew a strong response from the crowd, even as the late hour thinned the stands slightly from kickoff levels.
A Grinding Third Quarter
Georgia Southern received the second-half kickoff and moved the ball with the help of a Clemson penalty, but the Tigers' defense forced a fourth down and a punt. The teams traded stalled possessions through most of the third quarter — neither offense found rhythm, and Clemson in particular struggled to establish any consistent run game. Passes went uncompleted as Georgia Southern's defense adjusted; Clemson's offensive approach, by contrast, showed little in the way of counters.
Georgia Southern picked up a first down on a late third-quarter drive and tested Clemson's front before the Tigers' defense again forced a punt. The score remained 16-7 entering the fourth quarter.
Defense Holds Firm Late
Clemson's offense stayed stuck in neutral to open the final period, unable to find a spark, while its defense — effective all night but increasingly worn down — kept Georgia Southern off the board. The game continued to swing back and forth without much traction for either team until, with 6:26 remaining, Clemson leaned on a field goal to make it 19-7. It wasn't artistic, but it counted. The Tigers added another field goal with 3:10 left to push the margin to 22-7.
Looking Ahead
Georgia Southern's final drive came up short, and Clemson took a knee to close out the win.
The Tigers move to 1-1 and will host North Carolina next, as the Tar Heels — under first-year head coach Bill Belichick — look to move to 3-0.
