Tough Loss in Week 2 Showdown
Florida A&M University (FAMU) suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, falling to the University of Miami Hurricanes, 56-9, in a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) versus Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) matchup at Hard Rock Stadium. Under the leadership of head coach Colziee II, the Rattlers now sit at 2-1. Known for his defensive background, Coach Colziee would have hoped for a more competitive showing, especially on defense, against a strong ACC contender.

This marked FAMU’s first loss in 13 games, dating back to last season. With eyes on a return to the Celebration Bowl—the biggest stage in HBCU football—this loss is a bump in the road, but not a complete setback. The Rattlers are still contenders, and there are valuable takeaways from this defeat as they continue their journey to December.

Key Takeaways for the Rattlers

1. Starting Fast but Efficient
FAMU has shown improvement in getting things started quicker, but they still lack the efficiency needed early in games. Their rushing game, in particular, needs a faster start. To increase their rushing yard averages, the team needs to maintain a complete and disciplined offense with well-executed plays. Mistakes that cost them possessions and points must be minimized if they want to remain competitive against tougher opponents.

2. Establishing the Run Game
The Rattlers’ run game has room for growth. Offensive MVP of the Celebration Bowl, #9 Kelvin Dean Jr., has struggled to get grounded this season. Although he has shown his playmaking abilities, Dean hasn't been utilized to his full potential. Incorporating him more into the offense could help increase FAMU's rushing yards and add another layer of complexity to their offensive scheme.

3. Becoming More Disciplined
Discipline has been a recurring issue for the Rattlers, with unnecessary penalties such as unsportsmanlike conduct often hindering their progress. Staying focused and playing the game they know will help avoid mistakes that allow opponents to capitalize. Maintaining composure and eliminating penalties will be crucial as the team continues to have a target on its back as defending SWAC champions.

4. Strengthening Defensive Blocks
FAMU's defense isn’t as strong as it was last year, especially after losing Defensive MVP Isiah Majors. Although Kendall Bohler has stepped up as the new defensive leader, the team still needs to adjust to the shift in dynamics. The defense was a critical component of last season’s success, and this year’s unit needs to find its footing, particularly in stopping the run, to regain its dominance.

5. Consistency and Confidence from Start to Finish
In their previous game against South Carolina State, the Rattlers started slow, letting mistakes affect their confidence until a late-game comeback. This game showed similar patterns—FAMU needs to remember who they are as defending champs and maintain their focus and energy from the opening whistle to the final play. Confidence and consistency will be key to their continued success.

Looking Ahead
The Rattlers move on to face Troy University on the road on September 21, 2024. With the right discipline and attitude, this is a game FAMU can win. By focusing on these key areas, FAMU has the potential to rebound from this tough loss and continue their march toward another Celebration Bowl appearance.
