Howard Feggins Joins new HBCU as Running Backs Coach and Special Teams Coordinator

Former St. Augustine’s University football coach Howard Feggins has quickly found a new opportunity after his controversial dismissal from the now-suspended St. Augustine’s University football program. Announced on Tuesday afternoon, Feggins will be joining Hampton University as the new running backs coach and special teams coordinator, forming part of first-year head coach Trent Boykin’s inaugural coaching staff.

“Coach Feggins has a wealth of experience as a successful coach on the professional, college, and high school levels,” Boykin said in a statement released by the university. “He is an excellent teacher and instructor, and Coach Feggins is a student of the game.”

A Controversial Departure

Feggins, a former North Carolina defensive back who played in the NFL and CFL, was hired to coach the St. Augustine’s Falcons in 2023. However, his tenure was cut short after just six games when he was fired, with the university citing his use of ineligible players as the reason. Feggins vehemently disputed these accusations, filing a lawsuit against St. Augustine’s University. He alleged that the university intimidated him and forced him into silence after he raised concerns about the conditions that made it difficult to field a competitive team.

In a bid to stabilize the university's finances and athletic programs, St. Augustine’s has suspended its football program for at least the 2024 season.

An Impressive Coaching Résumé

Feggins brings a rich coaching background to Hampton University. He spent four seasons as an assistant football coach at Colorado State University-Pueblo from 2018-2021. As the running backs coach, he helped lead the Thunderwolves to the 2018 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) championship. Under his guidance, running backs Marche Dennard and Bernard McDondle earned invitations to the 2018 NFL Rookie Minicamp. Additionally, Isaiah Diggs was named to the 2019 All-RMAC First Team as a punt returner, and running back Austin Micci won the 2019 RMAC Academic Offensive Player of the Year. Feggins' mentorship also helped wide receiver Dionte Sykes secure a contract with the Edmonton Elks in the Canadian Football League.

Feggins’ diverse experience extends beyond coaching positions. At CSU Pueblo, he served as the returners coach, receivers coach, and offense academic liaison, leading to a team GPA of 3.2. He was also the community service liaison and race relations liaison, facilitating multiple Zoom meetings on race issues in America with NFL and youth coaches.

Since 2015, Feggins has owned SACS Sports, LLC, a consulting firm assisting parents and high school student-athletes in gaining exposure. He has also worked as an evaluation coach with NextGen All American Camp & The Show.

A Well-Rounded Football Background

Feggins’ coaching career spans several decades and includes stints at the high school and college levels. He spent the 2014 season as the head coach at Warren Central High School in Bowling Green, Kentucky, leading the team to a 6-5 season and a playoff appearance. His college coaching experience dates back to 1995, with roles as a coordinator since 2004. Feggins has also participated in the NFL Minority Internship program, working as a training camp offensive assistant with the New England Patriots in 2003 and 2008.

A 1987 graduate of the University of North Carolina, Feggins was a four-year letter winner for the Tar Heels, totaling 169 tackles during his career as a cornerback and strong safety. He briefly played in the NFL with the New England Patriots and New York Giants and spent two seasons with the London Monarchs of the World League of American Football.

Moving Forward with Hampton

Feggins is eager to bring his extensive experience and passion for the game to Hampton University. “I’m excited to join the Hampton family and contribute to Coach Boykin’s vision for the program,” Feggins said. “I look forward to working with these talented athletes and helping them reach their full potential.”

Howard Feggins and his wife, Renee, have two sons, Kevin and Jensen, who are equally thrilled about the new chapter in their family’s journey.

With Feggins’ appointment, Hampton University’s football program is poised for growth and success under his and Coach Boykin’s leadership.
