MEAC Issues Public Reprimand and Fine to Howard University Softball Coach Tori Tyson

The conference made its position clear — and it did not mince words.

NORFOLK, Va. — The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference has drawn a firm line. Howard University head softball coach Tori Tyson has been publicly reprimanded by the MEAC, and Howard University has been assessed a $1,500 institutional fine — the consequence of social media comments the conference determined fell well below the standards of sportsmanship and professional conduct expected of every coach representing a MEAC member institution.

The source of the controversy was the conference's Player of the Week recognition. The MEAC's investigation determined that Tyson's public comments on social media amounted to the public criticism and humiliation of a student-athlete — conduct the conference considers wholly unacceptable, regardless of intent or circumstance.

The MEAC was direct in its response and unambiguous in its message.

THE CONFERENCE'S STANDARD IS NON-NEGOTIABLE

Coaches in the MEAC are not simply game managers. They are educators. They are leaders. They carry the responsibility of representing their institutions, their student-athletes, and the conference itself — in every public forum, on every platform, at every moment.

That responsibility does not pause when a coach logs onto social media.

The MEAC holds its coaches, student-athletes, and athletic administrators to the highest standards of leadership, integrity, and professionalism. Public conduct that demeans or humiliates a student-athlete — particularly one being recognized for their performance — runs directly counter to the values that define this conference and its member institutions.

The fine and public reprimand reflect the seriousness with which the MEAC treats those standards. This was not a warning. This was a consequence.

MOVING FORWARD

The MEAC has stated that it considers this matter closed and will have no further comment on the specifics of the situation. Howard University and Coach Tyson have been put on notice — and the conference's expectations going forward could not be clearer.

Respect. Integrity. Accountability. Those are not suggestions inside the MEAC. They are requirements.
