Liberty Still Ablaze: Sabrina Ionescu Shines in Victory Over Sun
The New York Liberty remain a force to be reckoned with, as they showcased their resilience and talent with a hard-fought 82-74 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday night. Sabrina Ionescu led the charge with a dazzling 30-point performance, proving once again why she is one of the most electrifying players in the league.
A Battle Till the End
In what was the final game before the month-long Olympic break for both teams, the contest was tied heading into the fourth quarter. Ionescu, displaying her signature clutch play, nailed a 3-pointer to start the final period, reclaiming the lead for the Liberty (21-4). This crucial shot ignited a 10-3 run, giving New York a 73-66 advantage midway through the period.
"Ten more minutes, we have to buckle down and play harder," Ionescu said about the team's mindset heading into the decisive quarter. "Play our best basketball for 10 more minutes and lock in. (Kennedy Burke) got huge steals for us."
Despite the Sun's (18-6) efforts to close the gap, coming within four points twice, Jonquel Jones responded each time with baskets against her former team, ensuring the Liberty maintained their lead. Kennedy Burke also played a pivotal role, finishing with nine points and four steals, providing crucial support on both ends of the court.
Sun Struggle Without Key Player
Brionna Jones led Connecticut with 17 points, while Alyssa Thomas added 16 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. However, Thomas did not play in the fourth quarter, as Connecticut coach Stephanie White made the strategic decision to rest her before the Olympics.
The absence of Thomas in the final period was a significant blow to the Sun, who struggled to find their rhythm without their star player. Coach White's decision, while mindful of the upcoming international competition, left Connecticut at a disadvantage during the critical moments of the game.
Liberty Overcome Injuries
New York’s victory was even more impressive given they were missing two starters. Guard Betnijah Laney-Hamilton had minor surgery on her right knee and is expected to be out four to six weeks, returning after the Olympic break. Additionally, the Liberty rested Breanna Stewart for the second consecutive game due to a tweaked hamstring.
Head coach Sandy Brondello noted that Stewart would have played if it had been a playoff game, but the team prioritized her health with the Olympics approaching.
Fast Start, Strong Finish
The Liberty started the game with a bang, racing out to an 11-2 lead and ending the first quarter up 28-23, thanks to Ionescu’s 12 points, which included a four-point play. Despite extending their lead to 10 points in the second quarter, the Sun rallied to close the gap, going into halftime down just 45-42.
Ultimately, it was Ionescu's leadership and the Liberty's tenacity that secured the win, demonstrating their depth and determination. As the league pauses for the Olympics, the Liberty's performance against one of the top teams in the WNBA serves as a powerful reminder of their championship potential.
With players set to return from injury and others gaining valuable rest, New York looks poised to continue their impressive season. The road to the playoffs will be challenging, but if this game is any indication, the Liberty are more than ready to meet it head-on.
