Liberty Clinch Home Court for Commissioner's Cup with Thrilling Victory Over Mystics

The New York Liberty showcased their championship mettle on Sunday, edging out the Washington Mystics 93-88 to clinch home court advantage for the Commissioner’s Cup title game. Jonquel Jones was the standout performer, scoring a game-high 29 points and leading the Liberty to their seventh straight victory.

Liberty Lock Down Home Court

With this win, the Liberty (11-2) have ensured that the Commissioner's Cup championship game on June 25 will be hosted at their home court. This pivotal victory caps a grueling stretch of five games in eight days, demonstrating the team’s resilience and determination.

“We knew this stretch was going to be tough, but we stayed focused and pulled through,” said Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello. “Clinching home court for the Commissioner's Cup is a huge accomplishment, and I’m incredibly proud of the team.”

Jonquel Jones Dominates

Jonquel Jones was unstoppable, not only leading the team in scoring but also coming up clutch when it mattered most. Her putback with 4:03 left in the game extended New York’s lead to 86-79, and her composure under pressure was instrumental in securing the win.

“Jonquel was phenomenal tonight,” said Brondello. “She’s been a key player for us all season, and she really stepped up in this crucial game.”

Sabrina Ionescu's Steady Hand

Sabrina Ionescu also played a vital role, scoring 20 points, including a crucial floater with 1:30 left that gave the Liberty some breathing room. Her ability to hit big shots and her leadership on the court have been invaluable for New York.

“Sabrina’s ability to control the game and make big plays is what makes her such a special player,” said Jones. “It’s great to have her on our side.”

Washington Mystics: Room for Improvement

Despite the loss, the Washington Mystics showed fight, coming within a point of the Liberty in the final seconds. Jade Melbourne scored a career-high 21 points and kept Washington in the game until the very end.

However, the Mystics (0-12) remain winless and need to regroup quickly. Head coach Eric Thibault emphasized the importance of staying positive and continuing to battle.

“We’re holding up pretty well, considering the circumstances,” Thibault said. “We’re not happy with the results, but we’re not a discouraged team. We’ll keep fighting and looking for that first win.”

An Entertaining Contest

The game was a thrilling back-and-forth affair, with both teams tied at 45 at halftime. Highlights included a behind-the-back pass from Julie Vanloo that led to a Washington layup and Ionescu’s impressive dribbling and laser pass to Jones for a lay-in. Jones also had a monster block that energized the team and the crowd.

Looking Ahead

Liberty: With home court advantage secured for the Commissioner's Cup, the Liberty are poised to defend their title and continue their impressive run this season.

Mystics: The Mystics need to regroup and find ways to turn their competitive play into wins. With stars Brittney Sykes and Shakira Austin sidelined, other players like Melbourne have stepped up, but the team needs a collective effort to break their losing streak.

The Liberty’s victory not only ensures a home court advantage for the Commissioner’s Cup but also cements their status as one of the top teams in the league. With Jonquel Jones and Sabrina Ionescu leading the way, New York fans have much to be excited about as the team aims for another championship run.
