Big Hits on Dak Prescott, Raiders Fines, and Guardian Caps Take Center Stage
Week 2 of the NFL regular season brought a whirlwind of controversy, from massive fines to hard hits and a string of questionable tackles. The NFL’s crackdown on on-field infractions was evident this week, with 22 fines handed down, including 19 for unnecessary roughness and two for hits on quarterbacks. Among the quarterbacks targeted was Dak Prescott, whose protection remains a key concern for the Dallas Cowboys.
In a surprising twist, the NFL’s newly implemented hip-drop tackle rule resulted in no flags during Week 2. The rule, which involves four required elements for enforcement, is currently being managed primarily through post-game fines. Two illegal hip-drop tackles were identified, both by Giants players. Adoree’ Jackson was fined $9,804, while Michael Carter’s tackle on 49ers receiver Jauan Jennings escaped punishment due to the intricacies of the rule.
Raiders and Chargers fans witnessed a heated moment when a brawl broke out following a failed two-point conversion attempt. The altercation saw multiple players fined, including Chargers wide receiver Josh Palmer ($11,255) and Raiders cornerback Jack Jones ($5,472). Three additional Raiders players, including Maxx Crosby, were also fined for their involvement.
The NFL’s ongoing efforts to improve player safety are highlighted by the growing use of Guardian Caps, which aim to reduce head injuries. Colts running back Jonathan Taylor and Titans tight end Josh Whyle are among the players opting to wear these caps, which are designed to prevent concussions and spinal injuries. The focus on player protection is especially crucial given Tua Tagovailoa’s latest concussion, which has landed him on injured reserve.
As Week 3 looms, the NFL season is already packed with drama, hard-hitting action, and plenty of storylines to follow. Fans can expect more chaos, controversy, and excitement as the season continues to unfold.
