SWAC Championships Send Southern Women and Prairie View A&M Men to March Madness

ATLANTA — Conference championship week delivered another memorable moment for HBCU basketball.

When the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament concluded, two programs emerged as champions.

The Prairie View A&M men’s team and the Southern University women’s team each captured the 2026 SWAC tournament titles, earning automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament.

Prairie View A&M Completes Tournament Run

Prairie View A&M entered the men’s tournament as the No. 8 seed, but the Panthers delivered one of the most impressive runs in the conference bracket.

The Panthers defeated Southern 72-66 in the championship game, completing a four-game winning streak through the tournament.

Guard Lance Williams led Prairie View A&M with 18 points, while Cory Wells and Dontae Horne each added 15 points.

The win marked Prairie View A&M’s first SWAC tournament championship since 2019.

Southern Women Capture Title

On the women’s side, Southern University’s defense led the Lady Jaguars to the conference championship.

Southern controlled the tempo throughout the tournament and closed out the championship game with disciplined offense and strong defensive play.

The victory secured Southern’s automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.
