The road to Atlanta is beginning to take shape, and the inaugural Toyota Championship Projection is giving HBCU football fans a closer look at which teams have the strongest chance of earning a spot in the Cricket Celebration Bowl presented by Toyota.

Released Oct. 21, the projection identifies Morgan State as the current favorite to represent the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), while Jackson State leads the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship outlook. However, with conference races entering a critical stretch, the numbers also reveal several teams capable of changing the picture in the weeks ahead.

Unlike a traditional power ranking, the projection evaluates more than a team's win-loss record. It considers overall team strength, strength of competition, scoring efficiency, conference standings, remaining schedules, game locations and selected computer rankings to estimate each program's path to Atlanta.

The result is a weekly snapshot of the championship race—not a prediction of a guaranteed winner.

Morgan State Leads the MEAC Championship Race

Morgan State enters MEAC conference play as the clear favorite to earn the league's Celebration Bowl berth, holding a 63.4% championship projection.

South Carolina State follows at 19.7%, with Delaware State third at 7.3%. Howard and Norfolk State are tied at 4.5%, while North Carolina Central sits at 0.7%.

Inaugural MEAC Championship Projection

  1. Morgan State — 63.4%

  2. South Carolina State — 19.7%

  3. Delaware State — 7.3%

  4. Howard — 4.5%

  5. Norfolk State — 4.5%

  6. North Carolina Central — 0.7%

Morgan State's position gives the Bears the strongest starting point in the conference race, but the projection arrives as MEAC play begins. With a five-game conference schedule, the margin for error is limited, and head-to-head results could quickly reshape the standings.

South Carolina State is currently the Bears' closest projected challenger. Delaware State also remains in contention, while the other programs will look to improve their position as conference matchups begin.

Jackson State Holds the Edge in the SWAC East

The SWAC East race currently revolves around Jackson State and Alabama A&M, with the Tigers holding a 49.5% chance of winning the division.

Alabama A&M follows at 36.6%, making the Bulldogs a serious challenger. Bethune-Cookman sits third at 9.3%, while Alabama State has a 4.2% projection. Mississippi Valley State stands at 0.4%.

Florida A&M is listed at 0.0% and is ineligible for postseason advancement, although its games remain relevant to conference records and tiebreak scenarios.

SWAC East Division Projection

  1. Jackson State — 49.5%

  2. Alabama A&M — 36.6%

  3. Bethune-Cookman — 9.3%

  4. Alabama State — 4.2%

  5. Mississippi Valley State — 0.4%

  6. Florida A&M — 0.0% (ineligible)

Jackson State leads the division outlook, but its projection remains below 50%. That signals a competitive race rather than a runaway favorite.

Alabama A&M is close enough to challenge for the top position, while Bethune-Cookman could complicate the picture with a strong performance against the current favorite. With direct matchups carrying significant weight, the East could look very different after the next round of games.

SWAC West Remains Wide Open

The SWAC West presents a more crowded championship picture, with Grambling State leading at 41.6% and Prairie View A&M following at 26%.

Southern, Alcorn State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff are separated by relatively small margins, leaving several programs with a realistic opportunity to move up the projection.

SWAC West Division Projection

  1. Grambling State — 41.6%

  2. Prairie View A&M — 26.0%

  3. Southern — 12.3%

  4. Alcorn State — 10.1%

  5. Arkansas-Pine Bluff — 10.0%

  6. Texas Southern — 0.03%

Grambling State currently has the strongest projected path to the division title, but its position is far from secure. Prairie View A&M remains firmly in contention, while Southern, Alcorn State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff are close enough that a key win—or a damaging loss—could change the race.

The West's competitive balance also matters beyond the division standings. The team that emerges as champion will need to win the SWAC Championship Game to secure the conference's Celebration Bowl berth.

Overall SWAC Championship Projection: Jackson State Leads

Winning a division is only the first step toward Atlanta for SWAC teams. The division champions meet in the SWAC Championship Game, hosted by the division champion with the better conference record.

Jackson State currently has the highest probability of winning the conference championship at 40.3%, followed by Alabama A&M at 29.9%. Grambling State is the leading West Division contender at 10.2%.

Overall SWAC Championship Projection

  1. Jackson State — 40.3%

  2. Alabama A&M — 29.9%

  3. Grambling State — 10.2%

  4. Bethune-Cookman — 6.0%

  5. Prairie View A&M — 5.2%

  6. Alabama State — 2.7%

  7. Southern — 2.1%

  8. Alcorn State — 1.8%

  9. Arkansas-Pine Bluff — 1.7%

  10. Mississippi Valley State — 0.12%

  11. Texas Southern — less than 0.01%

  12. Florida A&M — 0.0% (ineligible)

Jackson State and Alabama A&M account for more than 70% of the model's projected SWAC championships combined, reinforcing the East Division's current strength in the overall race.

Grambling State is the strongest projected contender from the West, with Bethune-Cookman and Prairie View A&M forming the next tier of teams with a path to the conference title.

Still, these percentages reflect the current model—not the final standings. The remaining schedule and the results of critical conference matchups will determine which teams ultimately advance.

How the Toyota Championship Projection Works

The projection was created to give fans, media members and the HBCU football community a deeper understanding of the conference championship races.

According to the announcement, the proprietary model evaluates several factors, including:

  • Team strength: How each program is performing overall.

  • Quality of competition: The strength of the teams each program has faced.

  • Scoring efficiency: How effectively teams perform on offense and defense.

  • Conference standings: Each team's current position in the race.

  • Remaining schedule: The difficulty of the games still to come.

  • Game location: Whether a matchup is played at home or on the road.

  • Computer rankings: Selected ranking systems incorporated into the model.

The model uses those factors to estimate the outcomes of future games. It then runs 10,000 computer simulations of the remainder of the conference season, applying standings and relevant tiebreaking procedures to determine which teams advance.

A team's percentage represents how often it reaches the Celebration Bowl through those simulations.

For example, Morgan State's 63.4% projection means the Bears emerged as the MEAC representative in 63.4% of the model's simulated outcomes. It does not mean the team is guaranteed to win the conference or that the result is already decided.

The projection is also designed to update weekly. New results, changes in team strength, head-to-head outcomes and evolving tiebreak scenarios can all affect the numbers.

John T. Grant, executive director of the Toyota Celebration Bowl, said the tool makes conversations about team performance and championship paths more accessible to the public.

“The tool gives fans, media and the HBCU football community more context around the championship races, the teams’ paths and how the numbers are changing from week to week,” Grant said.

He emphasized that the model does not replace the games themselves or attempt to declare a winner before the teams take the field.

Six Games That Could Change the Road to Atlanta

With conference races becoming more defined, several matchups stand out as potential turning points in the inaugural projection.

Howard at Morgan State

Morgan State begins MEAC play with the highest championship projection in the conference. A victory would help the Bears protect their position, while a Howard upset would immediately give the Bison a significant head-to-head result against the favorite.

Projection impact: Very high.

Norfolk State at South Carolina State

South Carolina State enters conference play as the MEAC's second-highest projected contender. A win would help the Bulldogs maintain pressure on Morgan State, while a Norfolk State victory would make the race more competitive.

Projection impact: High.

North Carolina Central at Delaware State

Delaware State currently ranks third in the MEAC projection, making its conference opener an important opportunity to strengthen its position. North Carolina Central has the lowest projection in the league, but an upset could improve the Eagles' outlook and disrupt the existing order.

Projection impact: High.

Jackson State at Bethune-Cookman

This matchup is one of the most significant games in the SWAC East projection. Jackson State leads the division at 49.5%, while Bethune-Cookman sits third at 9.3%.

A Jackson State win would strengthen the Tigers' position. A Bethune-Cookman upset, however, could tighten the division race and give the Wildcats a valuable result against the current favorite.

Projection impact: Extremely high.

Southern at Texas Southern

Southern holds a 12.3% projection in the SWAC West and needs to keep pace with Grambling State and Prairie View A&M.

A win would help the Jaguars remain in contention, while a loss would make their path to the division title more difficult.

Projection impact: High for Southern.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Florida A&M

Arkansas-Pine Bluff enters the week with a 10.0% chance of winning the SWAC West, placing the Golden Lions close to Alcorn State in the projection.

Although Florida A&M is ineligible for postseason advancement, the Rattlers can still influence the division race by handing eligible contenders conference losses.

Projection impact: High for Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

What It Really Means

The inaugural Toyota Championship Projection gives HBCU football fans another way to follow the MEAC and SWAC races beyond wins, losses and weekly rankings.

Morgan State has the strongest projected path in the MEAC, while Jackson State leads both the SWAC East and the overall conference championship outlook. But neither race is settled, and the West Division remains especially competitive.

The 10,000 simulations help illustrate how different outcomes could affect each team's chances. They do not predict exactly what will happen on the field. Instead, they show how current performance, remaining opponents and conference tiebreakers combine to shape the road ahead.

That distinction matters as the season progresses. A team with a strong projection can lose ground with one unexpected defeat, while an underdog can improve its chances by beating a direct competitor.

For fans, the model offers a clearer view of which games carry the greatest stakes and which programs have the most work left to do.

The Road to Atlanta Is Still Being Written

The first Toyota Championship Projection establishes an early snapshot of the races to represent the MEAC and SWAC at the Cricket Celebration Bowl presented by Toyota.

Morgan State and Jackson State currently occupy the strongest positions in their respective championship outlooks, but the remaining conference schedule will determine whether those advantages hold.

As results roll in, the projection will continue to change alongside the standings, team performance and tiebreaking scenarios.

The question heading into the next round of games is simple: Who is in the driver's seat on the road to Atlanta—and who is ready to change the race?
