Toyota Deepens HBCU Commitment with Three-Year Expansion Across MEAC/SWAC Challenge and Celebration Bowl
ATLANTA — Toyota is expanding its long-standing commitment to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) through a new three-year agreement with ESPN Events, strengthening its presence across two of the most prominent showcases in Black college football — the Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kick-Off and the Cricket Celebration Bowl.
Under the agreement, Toyota will serve as presenting sponsor of both marquee events, while also becoming the title sponsor of each game’s halftime show. The move significantly increases the brand’s visibility during key cultural moments that blend HBCU football, marching band tradition, and community celebration.
The partnership also extends beyond game-day action. Toyota will become a sponsor of the Red Lobster Band of the Year program and the presenting sponsor of the Champion’s Circle presented by Toyota, further aligning the company with some of the most influential traditions in HBCU athletics and culture.
Together, the expanded agreement connects Toyota to the full HBCU football calendar — from the season-opening Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kick-Off, which launches the college football season in Week Zero, to the Cricket Celebration Bowl, which crowns the HBCU Football National Champion.
“Toyota’s investment in these properties represents more than a sponsorship — it is an investment in the institutions, traditions and communities that make HBCU athletics so powerful,” said John Grant, executive director of the events. “This collaboration ensures Toyota has a meaningful presence from kickoff weekend to championship weekend, including halftime performances and band competitions that are central to the HBCU experience.”
As title sponsor of both halftime shows, Toyota will be prominently featured during one of the most visible and culturally significant elements of HBCU football Saturdays. Halftime performances have long served as a defining showcase of marching band excellence, school pride, and entertainment, drawing national attention far beyond the field.
“Toyota is honored to join ESPN Events in support of these beloved HBCU events and the communities they celebrate,” said Andrew George, senior analyst of community-based marketing at Toyota. “This three-year agreement allows us to build a meaningful presence across the HBCU football season while recognizing the culture, leadership, and excellence that define Black college sports.”
The Champion’s Circle presented by Toyota will also elevate one of the Celebration Bowl’s most meaningful traditions. Each year, the Champion’s Circle jacket is awarded to a head coach, symbolizing membership in an elite group of Celebration Bowl champions and marking a lasting legacy of championship success.
The Red Lobster Band of the Year program further strengthens the partnership by highlighting one of the most celebrated pillars of HBCU culture. The national competition recognizes top marching bands across Division I and Division II programs, with season-long rankings that reward consistent performance and elevate engagement throughout the season.
“From the opening kickoff of the HBCU football season to the crowning of a national champion, Toyota’s presence will help us continue to grow these events while honoring the traditions that make HBCU sports unique,” Grant added. “This three-year commitment is a major step forward for the events, the conferences, the schools and the fans.”
Together, the MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kick-Off, Celebration Bowl, Toyota halftime shows, Red Lobster Band of the Year, and Champion’s Circle presented by Toyota form a year-round celebration of HBCU excellence — spanning the field, the bandstand, the classroom, and the broader community.
