CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Atlantic Coast Conference will enter the 2026 college football season with no shortage of star power, and eight of its top players are already drawing national attention.

Eight ACC standouts from six programs were named Monday to the 2026 Walter Camp Player of the Year Preseason Watch List, putting some of the conference's most accomplished and promising players among the early contenders for one of college football's most prestigious individual awards.

Miami leads the ACC with three selections: running back Mark Fletcher Jr., quarterback Darian Mensah and wide receiver and punt returner Malachi Toney.

The Hurricanes are one of only nine teams nationally with multiple players on the 50-player watch list, giving Miami an early presence in the national player-of-the-year conversation.

The ACC's remaining selections include Clemson linebacker Sammy Brown, Florida State wide receiver Duce Robinson, Louisville running back Isaac Brown, NC State quarterback CJ Bailey and SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings.

Miami's trio headlines ACC selections

Miami's representation reflects the expectations surrounding the Hurricanes heading into the 2026 season.

Fletcher, Mensah and Toney give Miami a representative at three critical positions, with each player bringing a different dimension to the Hurricanes' offense and special teams.

Fletcher enters the season as one of the ACC's most physically imposing running backs, while Mensah will be tasked with directing the Miami offense from the quarterback position. Toney adds versatility as both a receiver and return specialist.

Their inclusion also gives Miami the second-most selections of any program on the national watch list.

Clemson, Florida State, Louisville, NC State and SMU represented

Clemson's Brown is the lone defensive player among the ACC's eight selections. The junior linebacker enters the season as one of the conference's most highly regarded defensive playmakers and will be expected to anchor the Tigers' defense.

Florida State's Robinson provides another explosive receiving option to the list. The senior wide receiver will be among the Seminoles' key offensive weapons as Florida State looks to make a push in a competitive ACC race.

Louisville running back Isaac Brown also earned recognition, while NC State quarterback CJ Bailey and SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings round out the conference's selections.

The eight players represent a balance of established veterans and younger stars with the potential to become household names during the 2026 season.

What it takes to win the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award

The Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, first presented in 1967, is one of college football's oldest individual honors.

The 2026 preseason watch list includes 50 players from 38 schools. The group features 41 offensive players — including 22 quarterbacks, 11 running backs and eight receivers or tight ends — along with nine defensive players.

The watch list will be trimmed to 10 semifinalists in early November before three finalists are announced in early December.

The winner will be selected by the 138 NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors and announced during the second week of December.

Being named to the preseason watch list, however, is not a prerequisite for winning the award or earning Walter Camp All-America recognition.

ACC enters 2026 with plenty to prove

The individual recognition comes as the ACC prepares for another demanding season.

ACC teams are scheduled to play 25 nonconference games against Power Four opponents and Notre Dame, the most among the nation's conferences. The schedule includes nine games against the SEC, five against the Big Ten, five against the Big 12 and six against Notre Dame.

The conference will also have 12 nonconference games against teams ranked in ESPN's 2026 Way-Too-Early Top 25 and 12 against teams that appeared in the final 2025 College Football Playoff rankings and AP Top 25.

That level of competition could have a significant impact on the Walter Camp race.

For the ACC's eight candidates, strong individual numbers will matter, but performances against nationally ranked opponents could ultimately separate the contenders as the season progresses.

ACC set for another prominent national schedule

The conference will once again dominate the opening stretch of the college football calendar with its annual Labor Day presence.

Fourteen ACC teams are scheduled to compete in 12 games across five days from Sept. 3-7. The conference will also feature a record 15 Friday games during the 2026 season, including nine Friday appearances during the opening six weeks.

The schedule culminates with the 2026 ACC Football Championship Game on Saturday, Dec. 5, at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

The game will air at noon ET on ABC, marking the 14th consecutive year and 18th time overall that the ACC championship game will be televised on ABC.

With eight players already on the Walter Camp watch list, the ACC has plenty of individual talent to follow. But with a schedule loaded with high-profile matchups, the conference's candidates will have ample opportunities to turn preseason recognition into postseason hardware.

For players such as Fletcher, Mensah, Toney, Brown, Robinson, Isaac Brown, Bailey and Jennings, the journey toward the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award begins with the same challenge facing the rest of the conference: prove it on the field.
