Furman Women’s Soccer Explodes for Seven Goals in Win Over VMI
Bri Pinasco, Norah Roller and Jenny Jacobson each scored twice as Furman cruised to a 7-1 Southern Conference victory Sunday.
Furman women’s soccer turned a slow start into an offensive showcase Sunday, scoring seven unanswered goals to defeat VMI 7-1 in Southern Conference action at Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium.
Seniors Bri Pinasco, Norah Roller and Jenny Jacobson each found the net twice as the Paladins improved to 7-3-2 overall and 2-0-1 in SoCon play. VMI dropped to 0-11-1 overall and 0-3-0 in conference competition.
Furman Responds After Early VMI Goal
VMI struck first in the 10th minute when Ella Peterson lifted a shot over Furman goalkeeper Reese DeJong and into the far corner.
The Paladins answered less than 10 minutes later.
Hayden Barnett tied the match in the 18th minute, finishing a cross from Riley O’Bryan after Sarah Sexton started the play with a pass down the right side.
Pinasco then put Furman ahead just over a minute later.
At 18:33, Marlie Nagle drove into the left side of the box before finding Pinasco near the top of the six-yard box. Pinasco finished the opportunity to give the Paladins a 2-1 lead.
Roller added another in the 32nd minute, beating a VMI defender to the right side of the box before placing a shot off the underside of the crossbar and into the net.
Pinasco struck again before halftime, curling a 20-yard free kick into the right corner at 35:12 to send Furman into the break with a 4-1 advantage.
Paladins Keep Pouring It On
Roller added her second goal just over seven minutes into the second half.
The Birmingham, Alabama, native again raced beyond the VMI defense before slotting a shot past goalkeeper Maren Ryberg at 52:10, pushing Furman ahead 5-1.
Jacobson then joined the scoring party late.
After collecting an errant VMI pass inside the box, Jacobson scored her first goal of the season at 83:21.
Just under three minutes later, she doubled her total, finishing a pass from Kasey Sitko at 86:01 to complete the 7-1 final score.
The victory extended Furman's current stretch to 6-1-2 over its last nine matches.
Furman Controls the Numbers
The Paladins dominated the shot totals, finishing with a 22-5 advantage in total shots and a 14-2 edge in shots on goal.
DeJong earned the victory after playing 56 minutes, while Kylie Brookfield and Emmy Rikard helped close out the match in goal.
Ryberg recorded seven saves for VMI.
Furman head coach Andrew Burr credited the team's response after VMI's early goal.
“It was great to see so many players contribute today and help us to another SoCon win,” Burr said. “We have to continue to focus on getting off to a better start, but I loved the way our team responded for the next 80 minutes after they scored the early goal.”
Furman Heads to The Citadel
The Paladins will return to the road next weekend, traveling to Washington Light Infantry Field in Charleston, South Carolina, on Sunday, Oct. 4.
Furman will face The Citadel with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m.
